CSS International Programs IDAS/IMAS/IMES Admission Information Session: Keys to Your Future Success

On Monday, December 17th, 2018, College of Social Science organized “CSS International Programs IDAS/IMAS/IMES Admission Information Session: Keys to Your Future Success” for introducing prospective students who want to study at NCCU and in Taiwan. The programs are International Doctoral Program in Asia-Pacific Studies (IDAS), International Master’s Program in Asia-Pacific Studies (IMAS), and International Master’s Program of Applied Economics and Social Development (IMES). We were honored from directors of the programs giving admission information to the programs, and talking about benefits of studying the international programs at NCCU.

First of all, Professor Dr. Ping-Yin Kuan, the Director of IDAS, welcomed prospective students and said 10th Anniversary of the program. IDAS is the first to offer English-taught doctoral studies in Asia-Pacific Studies in Taiwan. The IDAS program brings an interdisciplinary understanding of the Asia-Pacific region and offers students courses and research with a unique optic from Taiwan. The program provides wide range of lecturers from many faculties of NCCU, and has been attracting students from all over the world. The program offers four tracks to study: Political Economy, Social and Cultural, Public Governance, and International Relations. We focus on giving students the opportunity to become experts in their field and places an emphasis on the combination of theory and practical research. Following by, Professor Dr. Mei-Chuan Wei, the Director of IMAS, emphasized that IMAS also was the first English-taught master’s program of its kind in Taiwan. The IMAS program is closely related to the IDAS program. Their curriculums focus on several main subjects: Taiwan and China studies, and other Asian regional studies. The IMAS and IDAS programs improve students specific knowledge of the region, broadens their horizons, and connects them with local students and professors in a multicultural environment. IMAS specializes in an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the important aspects of the region. The majority of IMAS courses focus on either Taiwan or mainland China and fall under one of three disciplinary tracks: Political Economy, Socio-Cultural Studies, and Cross-Strait/International Relations. IMAS ideal candidates are social science undergraduates with research or work experience in both the public and the private sector. Closing with, Professor Dr. Shinn-Shyr Wang, the Director of IMES, also indicated that the program is the first English-taught program in studies of applied economics in Taiwan. IMES provides rigorous economic foundations and solid statistical methods so that students can learn to analyze public policy and social development using the economic approach. The program places a special emphasis on the combination of theory and practice, together with, utilizes the talent of accomplished English-speaking faculty to enhance the program’s educational goals. Students can choose three tracks to study: Social Security and Welfare, Economic Analysis and Policy Evaluation, and Environment and Resources. Also, the program provides opportunities to exchange study in other country universities. IMES alumni are successful in their careers. Some of our students continued to pursue doctoral degrees in prestigious universities around the world, whereas others hold important positions in the private sector.
